Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale review
As a quick note; this one is a throw-back pertaining to Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale review. While said review is from way back in 2011, not a lot has changed (with the beer) — in fact this “strong ale” may have gotten better year in and year out. I may have taken some liberties with the less than stellar “writing” in the original review.
Well, sit back, relax, and enjoy our review as much as the beer you’re probably drinking.
Poured into a snifter/tulip/wine glass from a 12oz bottle
Look – A nice translucent deep red/copper, with a one finger, off white velvety head, and some serious lacing.
Smell – Lots of sweet yeast, very fruity (especially of the ripe variety), bright but rich malt, sexy smooth alcohol, sweet hops, musky, bright bitterness, with slight notes grass and citrus.
Taste – Really nice booze notes, earthy/dank hops, sweet bready yeast, citrus notes (mostly floral), sweet/roasted malt and bits of caramel and molasses.
Body – Full bodied (very chewy), awesome complexity, awesome balance, medium low acidity, medium carbonation, and a long finish full of sweet rich maltiness.
Overall (Drinkability) – Another one of the Dads favorites. Some brewers just have what it takes to put out seasonal/limited ales that are always tasty no matter the season and Lagunitas is definitely one of the leaders. This ale while “not perfect” is exactly why people get into craft beer (one way or another). This has the taste, the refinement, the refreshment, and all while being smooth, drinkable, age able, and the like. Born of a tall tale that is based in reality; out of the ashes this brewery and beer arose again and to the delight of many, many beer lovers. UISA (Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale) is worth the price of admission each and every time!
Final thoughts – This beast of an ale (in the best way possible) is as tasty as it is huge. Ranging from 9-10% ABV; one to two bottles will suffice. Make sure you drink this one fresh, if you have never indulged, and age a few each year for a most radical vertical.
A note from the Brewer
From the first day of the first congress at the moment of the passage of the first law, we became weaker. The extra-large B. Franklin said it well that you can tell the strength of a society by the paucity of the pages in its’ book of laws.
Today we are all surrounded by laws – Tax law, civil law, criminal law, Statutes, and Bills. Laws that make large and small criminals of us all. And sometimes just doin’ something that you like to do that hurts no one is also criminal, or at least strongly discouraged.
Seems we can’t be trusted to live well and safely on our own. On our own we would all probably descend quickly into mayhem, cannibalism, and ultimately shoplifting and jaywalking. If only we all could be trusted. It is good to have such wise fathers looking out for us…Isn’t it…? Whatever.
